I have lived in Kettleshulme all my life and have no recollection of any Billy Bennett living at Marl Bank, can anybody throw any light on this. When I was young, Horace Jackson lived here and had a very nice garden.

Hello Alan,

I think there are at least two photos of this garden and both say "Billy Bennet's Garden". Could he have been just the gardener? I'll try to find out this coming week about Billy Bennet.

Hello Alan,

I have tried to find out more about the mysterious Billy Bennett; I can find no trace of him at all in Kettleshulme.

The photos were copies off glass plates owned by Alan Shaw so I went to see Alan who remembers the naming of the owner of the garden.

I asked him who Billy Bennett was and he said he had no idea, he thought it was just a made up name.

So I think it ought to be renamed Horace Jackson's garden (courtesy of Alan Boothby's reminiscences).

Many thanks.

Should we call it Marl Bank instead of Billy Bennett's garden? The comments about Billy Bennett and Horace Jackson explain what has happened regarding the title.

I think Marl Bank garden would be more fitting, this picture could be before Horace, the man in the picture could be his father.
There is a story about Horace. Horace kept hens which would stray into the garden of Mr Stewart's who lived next door. Mr Stewart kept bees, one day Mr Stewart said, will you keep your hens out of my garden, Horace said, ah if tha keeps thee bees out a mine.
