#3014 Taxal Bridge

Post by drstir »

Image

I've just found this photo - said to be taken in 1845 - that I think shows Taxal Packhorse Bridge. But I'm not sure. Just wondered if anyone can tell me.

I also found a wonderful old photo here http://www.negh.co.uk/whaleybridgephoto ... &photo=405 that's quite different. So perhaps it's not the same bridge. Or perhaps it's a later version.

Is it ok to put your photo on the Goyt Valley website? (Including credit and link of course).

And any history of the bridge would also be much appreciated.

Thanks,

R. Stephenson-Smythe

Hello David,

This is a link to the Old Taxal Bridge.

Somewhere on the forum I once did a list of all the bridges in The Goyt Valley but I have no idea where it is now. There is so much stuff on here now.

Thanks for the response, R. S-S.

I tried searching the forum but couldn't track down your info.

If you ever come across it, I'd be grateful if you could let me know...

R. S-S Contacted me about the link. That forum is being a bit awkward, this is the photo in the link but we would need more info about the thread from R. S-S.

The bridge in your picture looks very much like the 17th-century 'Roman Bridge' near Marple.

Just a quick note to say I've posted something on the Goyt Valley website about Taxal Bridge and the 1854 photo;

I hope everyone's ok with my copying the photos from your website.

I've tried to get in as many acknowledgements and links as pos!

I am sure everyone is fine with it, we have never bothered because history is for everyone. In the same way photos should not be left in a draw to fade away.

I completely agree Norm. But it's amazing how many people hide them away under lock and key. I think you've done an amazing job with your Whaley Bridge websites. All power to your elbow :D
