Mevril Bleachworks workers

Post by chulme » Wed Nov 22, 2017 8:25 am

Forum members might want try to identify some people in the attached photo from my family archive showing ( I believe) the workers at the Mevril Bleach Works. My late father, also called Charlie Hulme, is 2nd from right, front row. It seems to be from the final years of the place, maybe around 1960, and someone is getting a presentation. Does anyone remember what year the place closed? My parents met while working

there in the 1940s.

Charlie

If you look on our photo website this photo is on and is titled Mr Brown's Presentation, 16 November 1954. A couple of chaps are wearing poppies, so the month is correct.

My dad was working at the Meveril when it closed.

As far as I remember, he left in 1961 or 1962, although I think he stayed for a while to help with the shut down after the official closure date.

So it is - thanks! So the next question is, who was Mr Brown? I believe the Bleachers Association archive is at Quarry Bank Mill - I think a visit may be worthwhile.

Thanks - that date does seem about right to me. It was a traumatic time in our family - my father did managed to get another job at Bernard Wardles - again working a 12-hour day

Here's another Mevril picture, this time taken by my mother. Her sister Alice Hill is on the right, Mabel Sidebottom second from left I think. Probably late 1940s.
