Re: Wartime Whaley

Hello everyone I have been taking a peek at the 1939 register on My Heritage and, surprise-surprise, my mother has gained a sister !! (She definitely didn't have a sister). Absolutely no idea who the person was in relation to the household and there is one other person who is blanked-out. So, it wa...

Re: Whaley Bridge PreWar Building Co

Whaley Bridge Ex-Servicemen 'PreWar Building Co.' c1923/25 ? If I was researching this I would try local newspapers from around that time. It may help to identify which houses were built under this scheme, who the builders were, and from there you might be able to look at the Electoral Roll for that...

Postcards

Hello, I went on that well known auction site and typed in -Whaley Bridge- and 182 items came up. Among them was 4 postcards that might be of interest to anyone researching their family history. They are two for Mr Bridges & Ruby, 18 Goyt Road. One for a Miss S.Brocklehurst, Market Street. One for M...

Re: Goytsclough postcard

Hello drstir I don't think you would get much detail even if the picture was clearer. I re-sized it and zoomed in and there is a wall, trees, and shrubs preventing a clear view of the buildings. There are also trees behind the buildings that blend in with the roofs so any detail, I think, would be h...

I was looking for information about the extended defence of Whaley Bridge such as gun emplacements, pill boxes etc. and I came across this which might be of interest to anyone who is too far away to see it if they wanted to.

Re: Wartime Whaley

History has always fascinated me and I love to find out about local towns and their memories. I remember my mum telling me of the bombings in New Mills. A German bomber hit a house just past the fire station heading towards Birch Vale and inside a little girl was playing the piano. She was killed i...

Re: Wartime Whaley

My parents lived near A.V.Roe which was frequently targeted by the raiders and there was anti-aircraft guns on the fields nearby. My mum used to pick up the shrapnel after a raid. Without wanting to change the topic, so if the posts become many I will move/delete them. Digger, was that at the Chadd...

Re: Wartime Whaley

What an interesting topic. Us "Townies" assumed that anyone in "The Sticks" avoided the bombing but did they? There must have been something that the German raiders would have had a go at even railway yards were prime targets. Anything that stopped the movement of freight would have been fair game t...

Re: Rev Samuel Evans of Taxal Church

Hi David, I am afraid you will not get an answer from R. S-S. Have a look at the New Find thread, he was not impressed with the time I was taking to upload his documents, he in effect then called me untrustworthy and then said I over reacted. He then left since I over reacted. I will have a few wor...

Re: Whaley Bridge in Colour

The pictures are good. The colour brings them to life.
I particularly like the Whaley Bridge station one with all the detail.

All the best.

Re: Shocked

Looking the the picture of the spillway it looks to be a very poor construction job done down to a price. I hope the rest of the reservoir is better made than that for the sake of those living in Whaley Bridge and the surrounding area. Norm may have a point about it being sold of to developers. Ther...

Shocked

Hi everyone, I was shocked to read that there is a possibility of the dam bursting and flooding Whaley Bridge.

I hope the water recedes and that the reservoir is drained so no one is flooded out.

I wish you all the best and I hope everyone is alright.

Regards
Digger.
