Re: Old Quiz Number Six Answers

36 for me this week, but I quite enjoyed it. I only read Hard Times again a fortnight ago, and am pretty sure that's the real answer, as Geoff says. The Sean Connery Bond answer's not right either, even before you start arguing about Never Say Never Again.

Thanks again Norm!

Re: Old Quiz Number Five Answers

Geoff wisely quoted: "Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem", as Douglas Adams once said.

He, of course, is aware - as you all are - that today is 'Towel Day'. Do you know where yours is?

Re: Old Quiz Number Five Answers

I'd never have got 12 of those (pop culture and football would see me booted off any tv quiz), and couldn't even hazard a guess at 9 of them. I missed out on another 7 through stupidity and a couple of unlucky guesses. Ended up with 41. I'd love every week to be like that, though. Good questions. Th...

Re: Old Quiz Number Five

Thanks, Norm. I liked these much better - even the phobia and the collective noun actually exist and are used by people other than tricksy quiz question setters, and can therefore be considered 'general knowledge' and fair game. I still couldn't answer nine, and have made some poor guesses, I think.

Re: Old Quiz Number Four Answers

Horrible for me too. 24 out of the 40 I managed to answer. Got the Harry Potter wrong and couldn't remember what the S in USB stands for. And you'd think I'd know all my horse and donkey combinations by now, but still went for 'mule'. Sums it up. Still strangely grateful, though, Norm. Keep 'em comi...

Re: Old Quiz Number Four

You're a mind reader, Norm. I'd just that second finished the Guardian crossword (Vlad today - hard!) and was wondering how best to put off the next three things I really ought to do. Now I know!

Re: Old Quiz Number Three Answers

I didn't like those one little bit. 31 blanks. Of the 29 I could answer I got 17 right, and that's being generous by allowing myself 'Headless Nick' without the 'Nearly'.

Thanks anyway, Norm!

Re: Old Quiz Number Two Answers

Thanks, Norm! Three quibbles with whoever set these all those years ago, though! I've allowed myself a mark for number 17 'plashing' instead of 'pleaching'. I've also allowed myself a mark for 'please and thank you' for number 31, since it's as good as any other of half a dozen explanations of the t...

Re: Old Quiz Number Two

18 blanks this week! Once again I remember this one, but strongly suspect that all my guesses will be the same wrong guesses that they were all those years ago. I always have a book of old Times crosswords on the go (easily obtainable, unused, from Abe Books for about £2.50 each). A feeling of déja ...

Re: Old Quiz Number One Answers

Is everyone being shy or modest, or both, or is it just a game of chicken between Giroliddy and me? I got 27. It's probably being an Old Hall oldie, on whom Time plays strange tricks nowadays, thanks mainly to Einstein's mucking about, but I actually remember playing in that one. I think that I gave...

Re: Old Quiz Number One

Eek. 15 unanswered at first pass. (Am I allowed another go?) Lots of topical references in there! I'm fairly certain I've managed 14 correct, with some outrageous guesses for the rest.

Re: Railway Quiz Answers

I'm impressed! I didn't do brilliantly either (in Geoff's 'dummy' run), and I profess to know quite a lot about all this - it was hard!

Re: Virtual Quiz 3 answers

Only 22 this week. Poor. I messaged you my answers, Geoff, but wasn't confident that I'd done it right. The Finnish for 'German' is 'saksa' or 'saksalainen', by the way: a lovely historical remnant and a reminder that those pesky Saxons got everywhere. (I knew that, but I've checked in my Finnish di...
